Porcine Serum

Porcine models are used in translational research and as surgical models. They are increasingly being used as the primary nonrodent species in preclinical toxicologic testing of pharmaceuticals. Minipig strains were developed to provide a more manageable version of the domestic pig. There are various strains available, each with its own characteristics.

Serum is a blood-derived product. To prepare serum, blood is centrifuged to remove cellular components. If the blood is anti-coagulated, it will yield plasma containing fibrinogen and clotting factors. Coagulated blood (clotted blood) yields serum without fibrinogen or other clotting factors. Blood serum is a major source of biomarkers.
