Rat are used within the pharmaceutical industry as a standardized physiological and toxicological model. There is a wide range of strains supporting diverse scientific pursuits including mechanistic studies of human reproduction, breast cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular research, investigations into the effects of environmental agents and much more.

Serum is a blood-derived product. To prepare serum, blood is centrifuged to remove cellular components. If the blood is anti-coagulated, it will yield plasma containing fibrinogen and clotting factors. Coagulated blood (clotted blood) yields serum without fibrinogen or other clotting factors. Blood serum is a major source of biomarkers.
