Non-parenchymal cells mainly include hepatic stellate cells (HSCs), liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSECs) and hepatic macrophages (also called Kupffer cells (KC)), and these cells only account for 6.5% of the liver volume, but 40% of the total number of liver cells. They release various substances to regulate or assist the functions of hepatocytes or neighbouring non-parenchymal cells.
